Event Overview and Success

The “Blockchain in Babi” event, held on June 29-30, 2024, in Abidjan, has concluded with tremendous success, marking a significant milestone in the region’s blockchain and Web3 landscape and writing history as the first blockchain hackathon IRL event organized in Ivory Coast.

The event was orchestrated by theBlockchain African Movement (BAM), an organization crafting innovative phygital experiences to foster blockchain adoption in Africa, in partnership with Lideflow, a startup that helps businesses and individuals accept and send payments in the African market.

This two-day gathering brought together leading figures in the Ivorian blockchain space, over 100 passionate attendees, and a vibrant online community with a reach of over 50,000 individuals.

Event Highlights

The event featured an insightful conference, an engaging hackathon, and ample networking opportunities, making it a hub of innovation and learning.

The conference highlighted the multiple use cases of the blockchain technology, from decentralized finance (DeFi) to agribusiness, and the importance of increasing blockchain literacy in Africa.

One of the standout aspects of the event was the hackathon, where 12 teams competed to create innovativeblockchain solutions solving real life problems and aspiring blockchain developers learn solidity to build a project using Lideflow’s API.

Special recognition was given to a talented group of women developers fromDigifemmes, whose participation underscored the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.

Winning Teams and Projects

1st Place: Cacao Tracking

Team: Marie Claire Kabran Epse Guehi (leader), Sita Victorine and Sereme

Project description: Cacao Tracking is a platform that leverages blockchain technology to trace the journey of cocoa beans from the farm to the final product. By recording each stage of the production process on a secure digital ledger, it ensures transparency and accountability in the cocoa supply chain. The system provides farmers with a tool to monitor their cocoa’s progress, while also offering insurance protection against potential losses. Through integration with payment platforms enabled by lideflow, farmers can conveniently manage insurance premiums and receive compensation in case of claims.

2nd Place: Miwô

Team: Dieudonne KONE KOLOTIOLOMAN (leader), Philippe ZAOULI and Dossa ZANVOKINDO

Project description: Miwo standardizes, secures, and simplifies diploma authentication and acquisition. The solution ensures diplomas are recognized and allows businesses to easily verify submitted documents during applications. Miwo eliminates the risk of diploma fraud and loss, standardizes student information for smoother inter-school transfers, and enhances diploma value globally.

3rd Place: Yotta Certification

Team: David KONAN (leader) Arouna OUATTARA, YADJOUMA SOROU and lrich EHOUMAN

Project description: Yotta Certification is an innovative blockchain-based platform aimed at storing and managing administrative and other types of important documents to ensure their integrity and security. By using blockchain technology, Yotta Certification ensures that documents cannot be altered or falsified, thus offering a reliable and transparent solution for companies, public institutions and individuals.

Upcoming Events: Blockchain in Mboa, Douala

Building on the momentum from Abidjan, BAM is excited to announce the upcomingblockchain event in Douala, Cameroon, scheduled for August 23-24, 2024 in Jaba space, a tech startups incubator organized with local Web3 organizations, Katika a web3 gaming wallet and Blockchain for Africa a web3 startup incubator.

Blockchain in Mboa will continue the mission of fostering a deeper understanding of blockchain technology and its potential to drive economic development in Africa. This event will be supported by prestigious partners:

  • Tether: The company behind the biggest stablecoin in the world in terms of market capitalization
  • FIO Protocol: A human-readable handle system that replaces all public wallet addresses across blockchains, making blockchain onboarding more user-friendly.
  • CoinEX: A well-established centralized exchange (CEX) known for its secure and efficient trading platform.
  • Internet Computer (ICP): ICP is a blockchain that enables you to build anything without traditional IT and Big Tech.
  • Buyam: an online marketplace that offers a unique feature by allowing buyers to negotiate prices with sellers in real-time, similar to a traditional market experience.

The Douala event will also feature a hackathon on ICP led by top Cameroonian blockchain developers from across Cameroon: Juslen Emengkeng, Mbuh Divine Cho freelance blockchain developers and Jane Kelly developer from Ejara an app that democratizes investment (including crypto) in Africa.

Final Stop: Blockchain in DKR, Dakar

After Douala, the last stop of this BAM events series will be in Dakar.Blockchain in DKR will be co organized with Kucibok, the 1st NFT marketplace dedicated to African Art and will take place at the DER/FJ, a government agency in Senegal created to promote rapid entrepreneurship among women and youth & boost the economy and improve the lives of Senegalese people.
